Underwater Wide Angle Photography

Tips for Underwater Wide Angle Photography

Shoot upwards

This technique will separate your subject and place it against a mid-water background

Think Big!

A common mistake underwater is to use a wide-angle lens to photograph small fish.  Think in term of entire scene, not just isolated subjects with that scene

Fill the frame and get close

The common fault with wide-angle underwater photography is to shoot from too far away.  Remember, the closer you get the sharper the image and the better the colour.

Keep the flash away

In order to minimize backscatter, it is essential to place the flash more than 1 m away and at an angle of 45 from the photographer's left side.

The silhouette

It is usually an upward angle shot with a dark subject against a sunlight background.  This rely mostly on forms, shapes and contrast for their effect.
